As I needed a simple pouch big enough to hold my phone, some bank notes and my cards (work tag, octopus, payment cards) for my daily usage, I started thinking about a basic zipper pouch.
Many tutorials already tackle the subject, like the one from craftbuds give great tips, explaining how you can make this basic pouch in a quick and easy manner. For this reason, I did not want to give you a step by step but focus instead on the supplies sourcing in Hong Kong.
You will need basically to choose two fabrics for the pouch: one for the outside of the pouch and one for the lining.
I have used for mine a beautiful green and blue Japanese fabric that I bought at the 1/F of the Western Market in Sheung Wan. There you can find a large selection of fabric sold by the yard. The quality is good but the prices are quite high as well.
I also bought the same fabric in red tones (ok I couldn’t make up my mind…)
For the lining, I have used a nice striped cotton fabric that I bought in a Sham Shui Po, Ki Lung Street stall for 20 HKD per yard.
I have just one warning to give about this tutorial: be careful when sewing the zipper! At one point, I managed to break both my sewing needle and the zipper puller at the same time! I must say I was quite worried that I would have to redo it all again but I managed to use the zipper puller from another zipper. Ok the result is not as nice as if I had saved the original one but I think it’s not too bad.
Lastly, I wanted to add a little customization and I found this beautiful lapis lazuli circle that I bought from the mineral beads shop I was talking about in my first post.
Since then, I have also found this shop Lap Sun Gem Company, G/F 192 Yu Chau Street, in Sham Shui Po where you can find this kind of lapis lazuli circle pendant.
I have used a simple chain to link my circle to the zipper puller. I have noticed that most of the time I actually use the circle directly as the zipper puller as it is easier to grab!
I hope this post will inspire you to create your own pouch.
Happy crafting everyone!
