where to find sewing material and fabric in Hong Kong

Recently one of my friend was looking for some special scissors for fabric cutting and I realised that I did not know where to go – how come?!

So after some research and time spent in the streets and shops of Hong Kong (which was quite a great way to spend my time I must confess!), I am now happy to give you my list of useful addresses to find sewing material and fabric in Hong Kong.

SEWING MATERIAL

G/F, 61-65 Nam Cheong Street (at corner of Lai Chi Kok Road), Sham Shui Po, Kowloon

Tung Shing - sewing material shop Hong Kong

You can find there sewing machines of many brands and their accessories (at cheaper price than department stores), scissors, tools and rulers can be found there.
Many brands are sold there: Brother, Hashima, Pegasus, Juki, Kansai…

I got my machine as a second hand and it did not come with the basic sewing foot. I got a new one for 28HKD there.

I also bought some air erasable pens to write on fabric for about 10HKD each.

7/F European Asian Bank Building, 749 Nathan Road, Prince Edward, Kowloon – MTR Exit C1

Rulers, tools, cutting tools, mannequin, sewing accessories. This shop is maybe more for those with “advanced” sewing level.

Important tip: the shop is closed at 1pm on Saturday afternoon.

  • Living Plaza

There are many living plaza shops in Hong Kong. They belong to the brand AEON.

The particularity of these shops is to sell everything at 12HKD (or almost everything – some items are sold at a higher price which is usually indicated in big).
You can find the full list of living plaza shops & opening hours here. I am sure you will find one near your place.
I have found some great deals there on sewing material: needles, tools, rulers, thread, elastic strips, and many other sewing accessories… I would recommend this place mostly for beginners as it is quite cheap however, cheap also means not always great in terms of quality. So it all depends what you are looking for.

FABRIC

  • Sham Shui Po

Ki Lung Street between Shek Kip Mei Street and Wong Chuck Street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon – MTR Exit A2

Sham Shui Po, fabric market Hong Kong

In these streets of Sham Shui Po, you will find a street market with many fabric rolls. Fabric is sold there by the yard at about 20HKD/yard which is quite cheap. On some small pieces (just a few yards long), they will prefer selling the whole piece in one go and will ask you for 5HKD more for cutting.
So don’t be surprised.

The shops of these streets are wholesale shops but they also sell small quantities unless explicitly described on their front door. You are welcome to take samples. To order, step inside and check if there is a minimum quantity required to place an order.
Usually, the fabric should be available within a few days.

  • Yen Chow Street Market Hawkers Bazaar

Lai Chi Kok Road and Yen Chow Street corner (in front of Sham Shui Po Police Station), Sham Shui Po, Kowloon – MTR Exit C2

Yen Chow Street market, Sham Shui Po, fabric market Hong Kong - fabric rolls

This landmark fabric market in Hong Kong is opened since the 1970s. With loads of fabric rolls stacked along small alleys, the atmosphere of this place is really unique (and I guess also a bit suffocating during summer time…). Some patterns are totally old fashioned but if you take the time to look more closely, there are so many choice that I am sure you can find what you need.
On top of the many kinds of fabric, you can also find some zippers and ribbons.

If you are curious about this market, you can take a look at this local news page describing the reasons why the government wants to relocate the market and why the sellers would like to stay there… I guess the relocation project is also linked to new profitable development projects in that neighbourhood, don’t you think?

323 Des Voeux Road, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

At the 1/F of the Western Market in Sheung Wan. There you can find a large selection of fabric sold by the yard. The quality is good but the prices are quite high as well.

You can take a look at the beautiful fabrics I bought there for my Japanese fabric zipper pouch.

  • Log On

You can find some beautiful Korean fat quarters cotton fabric in this shop as well as some A4 format cotton fabric stickers very useful for your DIY projects.
I have listed this shop in my 10 shopping places every craft lover in Hong Kong should know.
You can find the complete list of shops & opening hours here.

THREAD

  • C&S Industrial Company

Shop 6, G/F, Yau Nam Mansion, 97 Nam Cheong Street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon

A small shop in Sham Shui Po with a large selection of colors and metallic threads at a small price: a great stop for threads.
Take a look at the stunning gold thread I bought there for my leather card case.
